INFORMATION FOR DEER

Johne's disease is recognised as having the potential to cause significant economic losses for the New Zealand deer industry, where the disease is left uncontrolled.  Implementation of a control programme has been demonstrated to cause a reduction in the clinical signs of Johne’s disease.
Recommended steps for controlling Johne’s disease in deer are:
  • Preventing the introduction of MAP to a property or minimizing the level of infection.
  • Following a test and culling procedure for sub-clinically and clinically affected animals.
  • Maintaining a high standard of general herd health.
  • Controlling Johne’s disease in other co-farmed ruminants and keeping wildlife numbers (possums and rabbits) down.
  • Gaining professional help from a vet or advisor.
