HERD MANAGEMENT

Epidemiology is the study of factors that affect health and illness and is fundamental for providing insights into disease management. The JDRC epidemiology programme is looking to identify cost effective management procedures for reducing production losses caused by Johne’s disease.

The team at Massey University is working with farmers, vets and simulation models to study the prevalence and nature of Johne’s disease in New Zealand and recommend practical procedures for on-farm management.

The first comprehensive data set detailing the prevalence of Johne’s disease in New Zealand livestock was published in 2011 *.The surveys have concluded that MAP is widespread in New Zealand, with over 50% of herds and flocks infected.  However there is a low level of clinical disease, meaning only a small percentage of farms in New Zealand have a significant issue with the disease.  These farms are likely to be experiencing loses due to high death rates and lowered productivity.  The study has also confirmed that co-grazing livestock can influence infection rates on farm, both positively and negatively.  Farmers should avoid sequential or co-grazing of infected animals with other stock to reduce the risk of transmission between species.

Progress Report

(Oct 2011):

Following publication of prevalence data, the team are working with computer models and on-farm demonstration studies to determine the economic impact of the disease and the effectiveness of control techniques.
